Flowers, Foliage and Frogs = a good mix

Posted

A lot of people comment when they visit our farm that we have "so many frogs!". There was a time in the past when we didn't... and let me tell you, it was a completely different place in so many ways.

For me, the frogs are a great measuring stick as to the health of our farms eco-system. The frogs like the insects (that damage the flowers and foliage), snakes like frogs, birds like the snakes, etc. Without this cycle going on we would be forever using a regime of chemicals to control the habitat and ultimately the quality of our flowers and foliage.

When we first took over Tropical Blooms all those years ago, I tried to use more chemicals in one section of our farm to 'clean up' the insect damage to the flowers and I quickly realised it was a mistake. The time, cost and long-term environmental impact is significant. We believe that we are much better to over produce and allow for some small product loss... and have virtually no use of pesticides as a result.

The natural wild life are generally very good at controlling an influx of one animal or another and sometimes will do a better job than we give them credit for. We love our frog population and often forget they are even hanging around our plants.

Our apologies in advance if one hitch hikes a ride in one of our wetpack shipments to your place - its happened once or twice in the past.

Ironically, we have one staff member who has a phobia of beautiful green frogs... oh well - you can't win them all!
